Drawn from a word... Arthur Jones: Corpulent Awhile ago, I started a game: I met an artist, gave her a words, and had her draw something based on those words. Since then, whenever I meet an artist, I give them one SAT word and ask them to draw whatever they want. In the last two days, I've had, in order, Arthur Jones, Michel Gondry, Mark Newgarden, and Tunde Adebimpe draw words for me. So here's the first one, from my friend Arthur Jones, who is a fantastic illustrator, animator, designer, who is working on a bunch of stuff for This American Life, and who recently made a video for Man Man. Arthur's word was " corpulent." Click here for more "Drawn from a Word:" |

Right?
And I've got some amazing people to draw for me! Everyone has been really approachable. I'm still waiting for someone to hesitate or turn me down. I'll be pretty bummed when it happens.
What's great about this is that it's misspelled AND it ignores the dictionary definition AND it's totally awesome!!!
1. Can this be a book?
2. Can I be in the book?
I'm not sure of the intricacies of turning this into a book, but I'm definitely going to make it a self-published zine or book or something. I'll let everyone know, too. But turning it into an actual book might take some crazy legal wrangling.
And dude, I would so like you to make a drawing!
I'm using the larger format Moleskin (the thin ones that come in bundles of three). They are 7 1/2" x 9 3/4" and you have to do the drawing in one take. ('Cause all the others were done in my sketchbook as I wait.) If you have a good SAT word, use that. Otherwise, I'll come up with one for you.
how long did that take to draw?
Not long. I set there as the artist draws. The longest anyone took was a couple of minutes. This one probably took... oh, hell, I have no idea. Not long at all.
This artist reminds me of the person that did RKL album art.
I doubt he's directly influenced. I know Arthur and don't think he's that familiar with 'em. But they're both coming out of Mad magazine.
1) I also love this idea and hope a zine comes out of it. 2) This American Life did another great economy show here. They also talked about this podcast, which you might be interested in. 3) Movie tomorrow? Will it finally work out?
Wow. Can't wait to listen to those shows.
And yes, movie tomorrow. 8:30pm. Not sure what I'm going to show.
The TAL show is really amazing. I wish they started a financial spin-off show.
Is there a particular reason why they spelled it incorrectly? I love the head.
I told him how to spell it. He just shrugged when I asked.
I'm shocked you can meet these people?
It's an excellent project. Hagiology is still my favorite.
The comic book store is a GREAT comic store. All kinds of great people are always in there. And Gondry is pretty deep in the comic scene. | |
