Weekend Picture Post: Needles, Ca.

Needles, Ca.

This is an impromptu trip. I was originally going to fly to Mexico City, hang out with a friend, and then the two of us were going to drive down to Central America. After about a month, I would fly back to Las Vegas and visit my parents in Goffs and Needles, California.

But my friend in Mexico City got a directing job in Miami. So I bought a ticket to Needles, Ca.

It's quiet here. The desert is all desaturated pastels. I haven't seen my mom or her family and three or four years? I used to think the desert was ugly, but I see the beauty in it, even if it is austere.

My mom

Timmy and Morgan

Morgan and Justin

Marshall and my mom

View from the garage

Morgan, Marshall, Justin in front of Sam's Club, which is in the nearby town of Bullhead City, AZ.

Wow. This is what Sam's Club looks like.

Buying enough for an army

Yep. LOTS of junk food. Lots of processed food. I'm getting fat just looking at it.

The view from the backyard

Justin

The Mojave desert

I have no idea what this little guy is.

My mom's house is on the left; the Mormon church is in the middle; my cracked lens shows up as well.

The austere beauty of the desert

A cool plant.

The river

More of the Colorado river. This is where the Joad family gets the shit beat out of them in The Grapes of Wrath.

At first, my allergies went crazy. Now they're ok.

An empty pool

Playing in the backyard

Don't remember what game they made up.

Here's the next made-up game: basketball in the abandoned pool.

The basket was a laundry basket held up by a rake.

A typical desert ravine

I'm loving this book. An adventure story for adults.

I look weird here. I blame it on the sun-in-my-face and the weird Myspace angle.

Storms approaching; cracks on the lens looking like rain.

"He thought that the real tragedy of aging lay in the fact that the eternal boy still lives inside us, unaware of the passage of time. A boy whose secrets had been revealed with notable clarity when Maqroll withdrew to Aracuriare Canyon, and who claimed the prerogative of not aging, since he carried that portion of broken dreams, stubborn hopes, and mad, illusory enterprises in which time not only does not count but is, in fact, inconceivable. One day the body sends a warning and, for a moment, we awake to the evidence of our own deterioration: someone has been living our life, consuming our strength. But we immediately return to the phantom of our spotless youth, and continue to do so until the final, inevitable awakening."

It's a beautiful book, that is an amazing passage, and you have impeccable taste.

Is that considered part of the Imperial Valley?

Nope. Part of the Mojave Desert.

cute family. how far is Mom's house from the river? I wouldn't mind the desert too much if I lived close to a river.

empty pool = Gleaming the Cube.

Too far to walk. Maybe 2 miles away. I know that's close, but it's already hot here.

It's pretty cool that you took the opportunity to go home. I'll bet your mom was thrilled, man.

She's pretty happy. Not much of a family guy, but this is pretty nice. Just put up some demolition derby picks from the other day. It was a blast.

Holy crap, Needles sure has grown since I was last there. That was probably twenty years ago.

It's gotten smaller. From around 6,000 20 years ago to about 4,000 now. That Sam's Club is in Bullhead City, which is growing.

I take that back. Just checked the stats. We've been hovering around 5,000 since the 60s.

But you have a Sam's Club. And Big giant buildings. Those weren't there before. Tourism?

Ah. Okay. Bullhead City is pretty spread-out. I'm not surprised that it's growing.
