Mexico City, swine flu, kidnappings, drug violence

Tempting Fate

Stupid or not, I'm on my way to Mexico City in a week. Flights are cheap; a friend has work for me; it's time to go. I'm also going to do some research for my book in Central America, esp. in Honduras and Guatemala. And hell, when epidemics sweep the world, it's usually the second and third iterations of the virus/bacteria that turns really deadly, so if I get it now, and live, I'll be ok. And hell, I'm looking forward to seeing an apocalyptic Mexico City.

Be careful, Troy, and dress poorly so as not to attract attention. I've had friends whose family members have been kidnapped down there.

I'll be staying with friends who grew up in Mexico City. I've been talking to them about all the craziness.

Mexico City rocks. I lived there for three years. I think you would like the area called Condesa if you have time. Also be sure to see the Murals of Diego Rivera in the Dept of Education.

Another reason to go: improving the severely injured Mexico City economy.

I went to Mexico City last month for about 5 hours- not enough time to get sick or see a lot either. I'm sooo jealous of you!

Don't go to Condesa, it's where all the richy riches hang out.
Coyoacan is nice, but also tourist-y and overrated.

And the flu thing is totally blown out of proportion, as a distraction to other national / international problems.
