[Dec. 16th, 2008|11:23 am] |
Tuesday Night Movie Night Here's the movie I'm showing at Bridge tonight, at 8:30pm. Bridge is a restaurant/bar at 20 Broadway, between Wythe and Kent. I'm going to start making posters for the movies I show. This is just a sketch; I'm hoping to finish and print the lonely sole poster before the movie starts. ( Four more drawings... ) |

| Kramer's Ergot Release Party |
[Dec. 11th, 2008|07:32 pm] |
Weekend Photo Dump...
Kramer's Ergot release party So last Saturday my kick ass local comic book store, Desert Island, had the release party for the new Kramer's Ergot, which is HUGE (and expensive). ( A few pictures... ) ( A few more pictures... )The comic book people had a party and we were all excited to go, but then we ended up on my couch, which instills lethargy. Still, despite never leaving my living room we had a blast. Homo-erotic wrestling, dumb jokes, and general silliness. If there's ever a next time, we are bound and determined to make it to the comix party. ( A few more pictures... ) |

| Drawn from a word: Witzy and Voracious by Timothy Godek |
[Nov. 7th, 2008|11:24 am] |
Drawn from a word... Timothy Godek: Wifty and Voracious Awhile ago, I started a game: I met an artist, gave her two words, and had her draw something based on those words. Since then, whenever I meet an artist, I give them one "SAT" word and ask them to draw whatever they want. Here is another word drawings that are not in my sketchbook, and that come from the internet. This one is from the Timothy Godek, whose comics I love and whose journal you should all follow. His LJ is tymmi, and his website is HERE. An example of one of his comics, called ! is HERE, which is a continuous page about love, robots, and monsters. I gave him two words to choose from, and he kind of cheated. The rules are that you have to make the drawing in one sitting, and it has to be fast (since in real life I'd be hovering over you, waiting for my sketch book to be handed back to me). Anyway, he ended up making an actual comic with one word, so he went ahead and made a quick sketch for the other. The first word is voracious. ( One more! ) Click here for more "Drawn from a Word:" |

This one is from our very own illustrator volmerburroughs and the word is misogynistic. |

Drawn from a word... Brodie Kelly: Sussurating and Suppurating Awhile ago, I started a game: I met an artist, gave her two words, and had her draw something based on those words. Since then, whenever I meet an artist, I give them one "SAT" word and ask them to draw whatever they want. Here are a few more word drawings that are not in my sketchbook, and that come from the internet. This one is from Brodie Kelly who I don't know much about, but who draws kick ass words. Brodie, Sarah Oleksyk, and Julia Gfrörer ( _milk), all drew words at the same time. Brodie's words are sussurating and suppurating. Click here for more "Drawn from a Word:" |

| Drawn from a word: Execrable by Sarah Oleksyk |
[Oct. 24th, 2008|10:48 am] |
Drawn from a word... Sarah Oleksyk: Execrable Awhile ago, I started a game: I met an artist, gave her two words, and had her draw something based on those words. Since then, whenever I meet an artist, I give them one "SAT" word and ask them to draw whatever they want. Here are a few more word drawings that are not in my sketchbook, and that come from the internet. This one is from the illustrator and comic book creator, Sarah Oleksyk (check out her comics here) and the word is execrable. She found out about the game through Julia Gfrörer ( _milk), so her and a few friends sat down and drew a word. Click here for more "Drawn from a Word:" |

| Review of Deleuze and Guattari's Anti-Oedipus |
[Oct. 23rd, 2008|09:34 pm] |
A Pictorial Review of Again, another quasi-/pseudo- book review. I was reading a ton of books until I got to this book. I read about 10 pages a day on this book; constantly re-reading, and re-reading again, looking up references and allusions, pondering exactly what it is they claim and how it relates to my world and the world I see around me. Anyway... ( Read the rest... ) |

| Drawn from a word: Lugubrious by Julia Gfrörer |
[Oct. 23rd, 2008|11:45 am] |
Drawn from a word... Julia Gfrörer: Lugubrious Awhile ago, I started a game: I met an artist, gave her two words, and had her draw something based on those words. Since then, whenever I meet an artist, I give them one "SAT" word and ask them to draw whatever they want. Here are a few more word drawings that are not in my sketchbook, and that come from the internet. This one is from the fantastic Portland artist Julia Gfrörer (aka _milk) and the word is lugubrious. She told a couple of her friends about the game, so they all sat down (I imagine them at a Portland cafe) and drew a word. Click here for more "Drawn from a Word:" |

| Review of Jill Jonnes' Empire of Light |
[Oct. 22nd, 2008|11:20 am] |
A Pictorial Review of Again, this isn't much of a book review. I'm getting back into the swing of things. I'm drawing a couple of projects until the book is going full steam. I'd like to get back to doing a full book review once a week. ( Read the rest... ) |

| A cat comic on Malcolm Gladwell |
[Oct. 20th, 2008|11:55 am] |
Malcolm Gladwell on Genius So I want to draw a quick comic every day - no thoughts about style or anything; just a daily one page comic about whatever. Anyway, I also don't want to check facts on the internet, so I end up with what I have below, which says I was reading "Malcolm McDowell," who is an actor who was in A Clockwork Orange, If..., and a whole bunch of other movies, instead of "Malcolm Gladwell," who is the writer of books like Blink and The Tipping Point. The article I read by Mr. Gladwell is from The New Yorker, and you can read it here. It's a great article, and what it has to say about genius and age goes against the popular conception, yet is fairly substantive. ( Another drawing and a bunch of photos... ) |

| Mary Phelps Jacobs |
[Oct. 17th, 2008|02:30 am] |
Mary Phelps Jacobs Just so you know, Mary Phelps Jacobs was a real person. She invented the first modern brassiere to receive a patent. Later in life, she started Black Sun Press with her husband, Harry Crosby. They published James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, D.H. Lawrence, Ernest Hemingway and many others. She lived a wild life and became wildly politically active. A pretty amazing woman. For more Polly Comics, click here. |
